Ancestral Ties
Wearable Sculpture
This piece was created in response to learning about my ancestry. My ancestors immigrated to Fiji as indentured labourers and later started their lives thereafter discovering that they would not return to India. They worked as sugar cane labourers during this time.
This piece comprises rope manipulated to look like bangles and wires attached with paper printouts of emigration passes from indentured labourers in Fiji. The emigration passes were found on a Fijian government website dedicated to the indentured labour era (Girmit Era).
